A glowing tribute to 'important Tilburger' Mathieu Kessels

Reporter Stan Schrijen of the Brabants Dagblad visited this week and was allowed to take a preliminary look at the new museum.

Mathieu Kessels was a composer and conductor, published music and built musical instruments. Reason to honour the musician in Tilburg with its own museum. "Tilburg is textiles, but Tilburg is also Kessels."

"If only this log could talk," sighs Joop van de Meulenreek next to a chopping block from the former Kessels factory, on which copper was formed in earlier times. ''A beautiful piece. What all this must have been about. About the First World War, the crisis in the Netherlands, the Second World War," says Van de Meulenreek.

Next to it are old factory appliances and machines against a background of an old photograph of Kessels. "So you imagine yourself in the factory of the past," says Anita de Haas, initiator and president of The New Royal Harmony, which owns the Huis van Muziek on Stationsstraat, where the museum opens this weekend.

The duo is in the middle of the museum's new quarters, where Van de Meulenreek, who coordinated the design of the new museum on behalf of Kessels, will also give tours with others. ,,At the old location at the Textile Museum, some tours were still given since November 2021, but otherwise we remained closed. Due to corona, we couldn't do much and there was plenty to do here," says Van de Meulenreek.
